Vision is a word often used by artists to describe their inspiration and motivation- the thing that drives their creative mojo. As a photographer I need vision, literally.

I’ve always had terrible eyesight. When I was in fifth grade, I still remember my mom meeting me at the bus stop after school and handing me my first pair of glasses. Though I wasn’t excited about the prospect of being called four-eyes, I had been looking forward to trying them out all day. To see what I’d been missing.

The first thing I noticed when I put them on was how the trees transformed from blobs of green and brown to distinct shapes- crisp oval leaves and trunks with textured bark. This was fantastic. Of course I already knew trees had leaves, but to actually be able to see each individual one was miraculous.

Many pairs of glasses and contacts later, I decided to get Lasik surgery this past January. Several of my friends had the procedure done and couldn’t stop raving about it, and my eyes had suddenly gone on strike, getting itchy and bloodhound red every time I put in my contacts. So I saved up my pennies and went under the laser. It was a new kind of miracle, to be able to see without having to wear anything. To wake up in the morning without knocking things off my bed stand as I groped for my glasses. To be able to surf, run, snowboard, photograph, camp, do anything outside and do it all without any form of lenses, after eighteen years of having them as constant unwelcome companions.

This blog was inspired by the fact that I’m going in for a slight re-touch on my left eye this morning. Only a few months after the miracle, I’ve already taken it for granted. It’s as if I’ve always woken up with perfect vision. I want to remind myself that having great vision is something to celebrate every day- both the literal kind and its creative cousin. I’m hoping that from now on I’ll be able to remember this without the need for any more eye surgeries.

Created by Ben Swanson after my original Lasik surgery in January.
