After all my worrying, last week was a hit. Not because of my performance, although I pulled off my talk without any major glitches and actually enjoyed some of it despite my legs shaking like jello behind the podium, but because of the whole National Geographic Team. The staff was organized, funny, engaging and informative and so were my fellow Young Explorers. The UCSD student’s in attendance got to hear about territorial lizards, archaeological digs in Mongolia for ancient mammal fossils and of course the rivers, lakes and coastline in their backyard. They also got to hear about how to apply for grants to start working on their own exciting projects.
And if that wasn’t enough, the evening “Surf n’ Turf” line up was sure to please. First up was professional underwater cave diver, explorer and funny man Kenny Broad. He kicked off his talk by mentioning how odd the human brain is and that his hands were a little shaky before he got on stage. How ironic, he said, that he can dive down to depths of 300 feet plus in tight cave spaces without fear but talking in front of a group of people shook his confidence a bit. He noted that the Gallup Polls consistently rank public speaking as people’s number one fear, the second being death. This made me feel better about how nervous I’d been. Then world renowned mountaineer and archeologist, Peter Athens, took the stage and shared about the mysterious ancient Shangri-La Caves found in the Mustang Valley of Nepal. What better way to end a day of exploration and learning how to make it happen.
So now that the Young Explorer’s workshop is behind me, next up is Jay Leno! Well, not exactly. Hannah Bloch will be asking the questions, but I will be on stage with two other “guests” as we each get interviewed in front of a large audience. This one’s at the National Geographic headquarters in D.C. With a formal presentation under my belt in front of a hundred plus people, I’m looking forward to this Young Explorer’s Salon very much. People from the audience will be sipping cocktails, munching on appetizers and joining in on the conversation. If you’re gonna be in D.C., today is the last day to save five bucks on the tickets!
