Last week I had the pleasure of photographing for the Trust For Public Land (TPL), a San Francisco based non-profit that purchases privately owned land, restores it to its natural state and opens it to the public as parks, gardens and natural places with accessible trails in order to ensure “livable communities for generations to come.” What a fun shoot! Virginia Lorne, their southern California Field Representative brought her kids and friends and their kids, and we all explored along the San Diego River. It was fun seeing the kids interacting with their environment with such exuberance, they engaged the adults and got everyone interested in the tiniest discoveries.
The purpose of the shoot was to highlight “The Walker Property,” which for the last fifty years has been a sand mining company built along a portion of the San Diego River that runs through Santee. TPL has purchased the property and has been working with RCP Block and Brick to restore the area replacing invasive vegetation with native and restoring the natural hydrology of the river, which has been drastically altered by pits created from mining the sand. Historically, the sand of the river has been highly desirable because of how refined it is. The ephemeral nature of the San Diego River means it runs underground during the county’s drier months. Apparently, this underground filtration system has created the perfect sand for concrete and brick and has helped build the city of San Diego- from Qualcomm Stadium, home of the Chargers, to skyscrapers in the Gaslamp District.
Tom Phelps (pictured below with his work in progress) is the man in charge of restoring the section of river. He’s employed by RCP Block and Brick and was kind enough to join us on the property on his day off. Enjoy the pics! These are just a few of hundreds. I’m planning to add a more complete set of photos from the shoot in my “Portfolio Section” soon, so stay tuned!
